Not only did I have a hard time thinking about the difficult emotions I’d have to express, but I also wondered if I would be able to pull it off. Superstar Jun Ji-hyun, who's also known as Gianna Jun, admitted during a recent interview with the Asia Pacific (APAC) press that she, too, was in awe.

When asked by a reporter if she was afraid of the zombie actors, she laughed as she replied: Not at all. In fact, before we shot the scenes, one of the things I was most excited about was coming face to face with the actors dressed as zombies. When I was on set, I realised how much trouble all the actors went through to present themselves as convincing zombies.

I begged them for photos. I was able to take pictures with the zombie actors and really bragged about them to my friends and family.

Ji-hyun, 39, stars as the title role in the hyped-about special episode titled Kingdom: Ashin of the North, which premieres on Netflix today (July 23).

Her brief appearance in the last few minutes of Kingdom season two's last episode showed her to be a mysterious warrior who understands more about the resurrection plant than anyone else in Joseon, and even appears to have a few zombies in captivity.

The 92-minute special episode will reveal more about Ashin, her connection with the plant, and her involvement with what happened in the first two seasons. The writer of the Kingdom series Kim Eun-hee called the story the beginning of everything, the root of it all.

In a separate press conference with the Korean media, Ji-hyun added: I'm a big fan of the Kingdom series and writer Kim. Before I knew I was going to play Ashin, I talked to her and told her I want to be a zombie in the Kingdom series because I want to be in it. I said it was okay if it was a minor role or as a zombie.

Check

I worked with the zombies during the filming of the second season. One thing I went through then was, we had scenes in the forest very late at night, and the zombie actors would be wearing their fake blood on their bodies and faces. Sometimes, I would spot them having a meal under a huge tree in the dark.

So you can imagine, I was really startled to see that. This time, because I was experienced already, that didn't really happen. This time around, I saw the zombie actors wearing full makeup with their blood and everything, and talking on their handphone with their friends and families.

It was so realistic. They would be calling someone [and saying], 'Hey mum, remember to sleep tight.' Seeing these made me think about how on the verge life and death is. I got to think about what zombies are, and what the undead are. It was a very new experience.Jun Ji Hyun Talks About Filming Action Scenes For “Kingdom: Ashin Of The North” + Why She Chose To Appear In The Series

On July 20,  Netflix’s upcoming “Kingdom: Ashin of the North” held an online press conference with director Kim Sung Hoon, writer Kim Eun Hee, and cast members Jun Ji Hyun, Park Byung Eun, Kim Si Ah, Kim Roe Ha, and Goo Gyo Hwan.

Reasons Why You Need To Watch Kingdom Ashin Of The North

“Kingdom: Ashin of the North” is an extension of the second season of the hit Netflix series “Kingdom.” It is a special episode dedicated to Ashin, a character played by Jun Ji Hyun who was briefly seen at the end of the second season. The first two seasons of the zombie series were set in the kingdom of Joseon, but the special episode is set in the frigid northern regions to find the origins of the plague.

Kingdom:

Screenwriter Kim Eun Hee said, “I started by thinking about where the resurrection plant came from. I hoped to satiate people’s curiosity about who Ashin was and what had happened up in the northern regions. I thought a lot about the resurrection plant and I investigated a lot of material. The plant has very cold properties, so I became interested in the northern regions, and what would happen if the plant bloomed in a place like that.”

Kim Si Ah plays the younger version of Ashin, while Jun Ji Hyun plays the older version. Park Byung Eun plays Min Chi Rok,  a military commander who works with Crown Prince Lee Chang (Joo Ji Hoon) to protect the palace against the zombies. Kim Roe Ha plays Ashin’s father, Tahab, while Goo Gyo Hwan plays Aida Khan, the head of the Pajeowi Tribe, a group of warriors who are threatening the northern border of Joseon.

Jun Ji Hyun said, “After I appeared at the end of season 2, I got a lot of questions like, ‘Why were you there?’ When I read the script for ‘Ashin of the North, ’ I thought that the world of ‘Kingdom’ could undergo infinite expansion. I was really excited to be the start of that.”

She continued, “Ashin lives on the border and doesn’t belong to any particular side. She lost someone she loved due to an incident. She has experienced persecution and contempt from other people. I was a huge fan of ‘Kingdom’ and writer Kim Eun Hee. I met her at a private event and told her that I was such a fan that I’d love to appear as a zombie or in a small role. She gave me such a big role instead that it’s an honor. I didn’t hesitate when I got the offer because of Kim Eun Hee. I could’ve felt hesitation because it was a zombie genre show, but I think that ‘Kingdom’ itself is its own genre.”

About filming action scenes like archery, she said, “I’m pretty fit in general, I exercise every day, so I was already ready for the challenge. Archery was the most important part of ‘Ashin of the North.’ I practiced with a bow and arrow, but Ashin doesn’t actually have that many action scenes. She gets rid of zombies with a single arrow.
